Spring 2023 Wrap Up

We had a tremendous 2022-2023 school year! In addition to many successful performances on campus, we had several guest artists come work with the studio: John Cord, Matt Vangjel, Raquel Samayoa and Jacinda Ripley. Three of our students graduated and are heading off to grad school too!

In April, I.S.U. Trumpet Studio member and president of the Music Student Multicultural Association, KT Freimuth, helped host the first ever Music and Disability Convocation through the help of the School of Music, the Sage Foundation and assistance from Dr. McNamara. The convocation featured guest artists Dr. Catherine Lewis, Andy Slater and Molly Joyce.

In mid May, Dr. McNamara performed the solo flugelhorn chair with the Athena Brass Band at their spring concert in Louisville, KY!

I.S.U. Trumpet Ensemble Concert in Peoria!

We hope if you’re in the Peoria area, you’ll join us for this special concert! Works performed include Gabrieli’s Canzon per Sonare #2, McKee’s Durrenhorn Passage, Morales’s Cityscapes and many arrangements of famous classical works including Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat, the Habanera from Carmen, Eine Klein Nachtmusik, and Clair de Lune. Dr. McNamara will perform The Maid of the Mist, McKee’s A Winter’s Night and Ulysses Kay’s Tromba with Lu Witzig on piano.

Summer and Fall 2022!

During the summer of 2022, Anne presented and published her research on “The History of Women Trumpet Professors.” Her presentation took place as part of the 2022 IWBC conference in Denton, Texas and her article was published by the International Trumpet Guild in their June 2022 issue. She is incredibly grateful to IWBC and ITG for their support of her research and to the many women who graciously provided their career information.

In July, Anne performed as a guest artist with the Brass Band of Central Illinois on two of their summer concerts. In addition to playing principal cornet and solo flugelhorn respectively, she performed H.L. Clarke’s “The Debutante” and the flugelhorn solo from “Gabriel’s Oboe” with the band.

2022 National Trumpet Competition Trip

March 29-April 3rd, Six members of the I.S.U. Trumpet Studio traveled with
Dr. McNamara to the 2022 National Trumpet Competition in Newark, Delaware. On their way to the competition, they made a stop at University of Maryland College Park to get a coaching from Chris Gekker. The six students performed a work commissioned by Dr. McNamara and composed by I.S.U. composition faculty member, Dr. Roy Magnuson. The work, inspired by Schubert’s Erlkönig is entitled “through the night, dark and drear.” Jeri Blade, KT Freimuth, Seth Marshall, Christian McLaughlin, Katherine Shindledecker and Ryan Valdivia played beautifully!
